Marais des Cygnes was established in 1992 as a unit of the National Wildlife Refuge System managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. We were established to protect and restore bottomland hardwood forest habitat. These forests flood on a regular basis and the plants there are adapted to those changes and support a wide variety of animals and birds. The 7500 acres of the Refuge also includes wetlands and prairie and the Marais des Cygnes River flows through the center of the Refuge. The Visitor Center has interactive exhibits and there are numerous trails and areas to explore including a paved, accessible, Nature Discovery Trail at the Visitor Center. Various guided activities are offered throughout the year.
